Royal Entertainments: The Poetry of John Gower in the 15th-century English, Portuguese and Castilian Courts presents a reading, with musical accompaniment, of a section of the medieval English, Portuguese and Spanish texts of the poem, trying to recreate what was heard in the courts of England, Portugal and Spain in the fifteenth century.

John Gower’s Confessio Amantis was translated into Portuguese and Spanish in the early fifteenth century. Not only is it the first English work ever translated in the Iberian Peninsula, but it is also the first English poem known to have been rendered into any Continental vernacular language during the Middle Ages.  |
